Experience the Upper Peninsula in Five Places or Less

Miles of untouched wilderness, remarkable shorelines, and a boundless energy – this is the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This lush landscape remains a hidden secret to most outside of its rugged population. But those who have found themselves surrounded by this beautiful nature have easily been charmed by all the UP has to offer. But with its forests and beaches and everywhere in between, it’s hard to decide where to even start. Fortunately, these five places are some of the best areas to visit to fully immerse yourself in the culture that is the Upper Peninsula.

Five

Mackinac Island

Settled between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas on the fresh waters of Lake Huron is Mackinac Island. While not decidedly a member of either the Upper or Lower Peninsula, we’re going to consider it a part of the former. It certainly has the atmosphere of being so, with its natural wonders and historic charm.

This quaint little island is only a few miles around, but it makes a big impressions on the visitors that happen upon its shores. It’s an escape from the hustle and bustle of busy streets with no motor vehicles and miles and miles of walking paths. Visitors can venture out to scenic landscapes such as the infamous Arch Rock, or sandy beaches, like relaxing British Landing. For those interested in experiencing life like the locals, take a horse-drawn carriage along downtown or enjoy one of the many foods and festivals on the island. It’s the perfect place to fall in love with all the wonders of the UP.

Four

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Along the northern cost of the Upper Peninsula many marvel at the stunning cliffsides of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This site is a hot spot destination for travelers from all over the region, and it can be for you too. From swimming to boating to hiking and more, the outdoor adventures are numerous on the lakeshore. There are also several camping options available so the fun never has to end before you want it to.

Three

Marquette

A trip to the Upper Peninsula wouldn’t be complete without stay in Marquette. Despite housing only 20,000 residents in its limits, Marquette is actually the most populous city in all of the UP, which means all the creature comforts of civilization are right at your doorstep. But don’t forget to take a moment to appreciate the attractions that are truly Yooper.

For example, explore the hiking trails of Presque Isle Park, which offer panoramic views of Lake Superior. Or snack on a few pasties, flaky pastries filled with savory ingredients. Or dine and drink at one of the warm and welcoming restaurants down by the docks. These experiences, and so many more, are what make for lasting memories of the best parts of Michigan.

Two

Copper Harbor to Isle Royale National Park

At the northernmost point of the Upper Peninsula is the small town of Copper Harbor. And while it doesn’t attract a mass of tourists, it does serve as a launching point to Isle Royale National Park. Located entirely on a small group of islands on Lake Superior, Isle Royale contains some of the most breathtaking wilderness in the entire country. This is where travelers come to seek solitude and isolation. Beautifully blended are the rugged areas of remote wilderness and the quiet stillness of mountains and forests. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t still plenty of entertainment to be had here. There are trails, bays, and shores to explore, and there are visitors centers and campgrounds for when you find yourself in need of some company to share this experience with.

One

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park

If you needed yet another excuse to come to the Upper Peninsula, then make sure to add Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park to the list. This sprawling and forested area contains thousands of acres of the great outdoors. It’s a popular place in warm and cold climates with activities like hiking and fishing in the summers and ice climbing and cross-country skiing in the winter. Not to mention the photos you’ll get at every turn. It’ll definitely leave you wanting to come back for more.
