Add Amarillo to Your Texas Travel Plans

Let’s face it — Amarillo isn’t the first destination that comes to mind when planning a trip to Texas. But it should be. The vastness of the Texas panhandle isolates most travelers. And destinations like Dallas, Austin, and even the beach bliss of South Padres Island can eagerly entice tourists away from exploring this wild west region of the state. But while Amarillo doesn’t necessarily have bustling crowds or premier resorts, it does have a rich cultural background, exciting outdoor adventures, and curated culinary choices that not only represent the state but also showcase the beauty of the city.

Art

Amarillo has a widely diverse art and culture scene evident throughout the town. From visual to performing arts, there’s something here to intrigue your interests. Start at the Amarillo Cultural District, which works to showcase and promote art appreciation in Amarillo. Here, you can stroll through several portrayals of the city’s public art and get a feel for the creative community that exists here. For a more structured artistic attraction, visit the Amarillo Museum of Art, which houses a revolving and diverse selection of exhibitions year-round. You can also choose to immerse yourself in the city’s history by walking through downtown and Center City.

Performing arts are also fairly popular here in Amarillo. Take advantage of theatre performances or dance and ballet at the Amarillo Civic Center. There are also plenty of opportunities to see local bands perform live music at other smaller venues. And don’t forget to make time to travel along the infamous Route 66 in Amarillo, and visit related attractions, such as the colorful Cadillac Ranch.

Adventure

Arguably my favorite feature in Amarillo actually rests 30 miles, 48 kilometers, outside of the city. Palo Duro Canyon State Park brings stunning cliff and canyon landscapes right to the heart of the Texas panhandle. Visitors can embark on miles and miles of hiking trails, breathe in the beauty of park through scenic overlooks, or enjoy more thrilling activities like zip-lining or horseback riding. The park also has several campsites and cabins available so you can make the most out of an overnight stay in this natural wonder.

Back in Amarillo, on the north side, sits a different kind of gripping adventure. Wonderland Amusement Park is the perfect place to spend a sweet summer day with friends and family. The park contains several family fun rides, games, thrilling rollercoasters and so much more. There’s an exciting experience waiting for everyone in your group at Wonderland Amusement Park.

A 72 oz. Steak

Amarillo is no exception to full flavors and delicious dishes. I’m talking about a big, juicy steak, of course. Texas is steak country after all. And while there are certainly plenty of steakhouses in Amarillo to choose from, the Big Texan Steak Ranch is definitely the place to be. This rustic restaurant attracts culinary customers of all ages and attitudes, primarily due to its renowned 72 oz. steak challenge. Customers can choose to take on this challenge for the chance to win a free 72 oz. steak — that is, if they can eat it all in one sitting. For those who are looking for a lighter meal, the Big Texan Steak Ranch also offers appetizers, sandwiches, and snacks.

Aside from steak, Amarillo also serves up other Texas classics, including barbecue and chili. Restaurants to keep on your radar include Tyler’s Barbeque and Hoffbrau Steak & Grill House.

And this is just the surface. There are many more museums to visit, gardens and parks to walk through, and southern foods to try. There are also shopping outlets, animal encounters, and western events novel to this charming city. Amarillo balances creature comforts with clearly Texan traditions to make for a unique visiting experience. It’ll leave a lasting impression and that’s why it’s a place worth adding to your next Texas trip.
